Hello John,

I found your McMahon Family History website today and am interested in Charles Joseph McDonell who died in the battle of Passchendaele. I notice from your homepage that you are in touch with a McDonell who has done a lot of the family history research. He is in my family tree as he married a Gannon (Ada May Gannon) – her grandfather Michael Gannon was my GGGG grandfather.

I have cleaned up all the references below on Trove.

Charles died in Belgium at the battle of passchendaele, what has me most curious is who A E Anderson is? Do you have any lines that I could investigate?

He was not married when he enlisted, and I am wondering what he could have done that would inspire such loyalty. He is still getting memorials 25 years after his death and not only that but inserted even after A E Anderson had died. I am even unsure whether this person is male or female. I wondered if it was a parent of a son who served with him.

There was an Anderson who died the day before him at Passchendaele who I noticed in the memorials on active service, although not in the same battalion. However he doesn’t have a family member in his memorial with the initials A.E

Thought it was an interesting query for the moment. If I can find out I will approach the War Memorial as they will be featuring his name next week. I would appreciate if you have any ideas.

Kind regards,

Karen Whiley

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Monday 5 November 1917 p 8 Article

News has been received of the death in Flanders of Private Charles Joseph McDonell, second son of Mr. C. J. McDonell, of the

firm of Messrs. McDonell and Moffitt, soli- citors. Private McDonell was educated at the Christian Brothers' College, Lewisham, and afterwards studied for the law, being more than half way through his legal exa- minations when he enlisted in December, 1915. He resided with his parents at Arundel, Vic- toria-square, Ashfield, up to the time of join-

ing the A.I.F. He left Australia in April, 191?, and after training in England, reached France early in September, in time to participate in the Somme offensive. He was at Po- zieres and Bapaume. In the winter of 1916 he was invalided to England, suffering from trench feet, but rejoined his unit and took part in the historic battles of Bullecourt and Lagnicourt. He was later transferred with the Australians to the Flanders front, and it is surmised that he was fatally wounded in the recent fighting, though de- tails of his injury have not yet been re- ceived. He died in hospital on October 13. Private McDonell was 24 years of age last

June.

The Northern Champion (Taree, NSW : 1913 - 1954) Wednesday 7 November 1917 p 4 Article

Private Charles Joseph McDonell

(Deceased.)

Australia's contribution, in young men, to the preservation of the Empire, has been of her best. They have realised that

"Life is but a little holiday— lent — To do a mighty service; If in God's am spent

We become one with the universe and stars, Else die we with the sun."

None of Australia's 300,000 soldiers in the line of battle more truly represented all that is best and bravest in our manhood than did young Char- lie McDonell. His father, after whom he was called, and his father's firm, of McDonell and Moffitt, stood for all that was straight in professional life. The son became articled to his father, and was destined to keep up the good old firm's name and practice, as its founders passed to the Great Beyond. The war came and would not brook delay. The Empire called for her manhood. Young McDonell left the "plough in the field"— did not wait to

finish his studies for admission as a solicitor, and rushed to do a man's part in his country's war. No narrow-minded prejudice filled his young soul. No warping influence permeated the fine homelife and broad Australian influences which were his. As an articled clerk he followed in the fine footsteps of his father. As a man it can be said of his passing to the other side— 'E'en as ho walked that day to God,

So walked he from his birth, In simpleness, and gentleness, and honor, and clean mirth." His devotion to his country and all that it stands for rose clear and high above all prejudice. An ardent Ca- tholic, he ranks with the sons of many Catholics in this district whose names — often Irish, and Irish-Ger- man — point to the one great fact in their lives, lived for honor and coun- try and manhood and democracy, that

"All service ranks the same with God, "With God, Whose puppets, best and worst, are we; "There is no last nor first.'

Young McDonell could have worn the officer's stars. He elected to re- main as a simple private. His experi- ments with his brother in the in- venting and perfecting of a small home "wireless" plant at Ashfied stood our forces in some stead in France, where on one tight occasion he was able, as a volunteer, to work as a signaller a wireless plant. He could, and did, turn his hand to any thing as a soldier, and revelled in the life. A couple of days before the news of his death reached Sydney his father had a letter from him in his usual bright, hopeful strain. He had only just returned from 10 days furlough in England when he re- ceived the wounds which proved fatal.
