Subject: Grandma McMahon.(Ellen Violet Hodges) 1885-1966.

Ellens Father was John H Hodges 1847-1922. Her Mother was Mary Elizabeth O Donnell 1853-1917.

John Hodges Photo hung in Grandmas Lounge till her death and was given to a Hodges family who lived at Mt Colah.I did borrow that Photo and got a copy. The Photo always interested me as it was a presentation from the people of Teralba NSW in thanks for all the Hodges family did to assist in the early days.

On researching John I found the following.......

He was born in England and on arrival in NSW became a contractor in Bathurst and then a farmer at Molong. He had 4 sons and 2 daughters and moved to Teralba and started a Grocery business in 1888.Some time later a fire destroyed the store .

In 1890 John built The Great Northern Hotel and he became the first Publican and Licence until 1908 .The Hotel was sold to Tooth & Co in 1923 and demolished and re built .A local woman who worked in The Hotel( Elizabeth ?) who had 6 children was killed when a

Heater caught fire.

John formed & owned The Boolaroo Racecourse and Lake McQuarie Coursing Ground.Opened Teralba Gravel Quarry and built Hamilton Markets.Hodges Hall was built near the Hotel by John and Church services were held here until St Michaels Catholic Church was built (originally Methodist however was sold to the Catholics in 1903)

John Died in 1922 and buried in Wallsend Cemetry.

John Wright.
